11.04.07 So last night my friend Diana invited me out to see a band that (much to many's suprise I imagine) I'd never ever heard of: Lucero. Apparently, about half the people I know - ok, maybe that's an exaggeration - love this band. I mean love this band, as in have all their albums, see them everytime they come to town, etc. My friend Mark raved about them in an email I received before I ran out the door to catch the subway up to the venue in Williamsburg. All I was concerned about was that the show was actually worth the hour subway ride from my house, the cab fare home (around $30 not including tip) and the $15, not to mention the $6 glasses of Budweiser. Catch my drift? I can say that yes, by all means, the show was totally worth all that. |

Lucero played for about an hour and a half, maybe longer, which seems unheard of for a regular live show. Diana told me sometimes they play for over two hours. I didn't think I'd be able to stand that long, so thank god it was a little shorter. The venue itself used to be a place called North Six, was bought out by the Mercury Lounge people, gutted, renovated and now is a huge space with a main floor stage area, an elevated 1/2 level up for spectators and a higher top level balcony with chairs (which may be for bands/VIPs but I didn't try to run up and find out). ....speaking of bands, I will have to finish this review later, as right now I'm running out the door to go hang out with my totally insane buddy who plays bass/sings in yes, THE GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME, the Beets (Queens, reprezentin', baby!). |
